It's time to give back. You’re comfortable in your classroom and you enjoy teaching students. This session is about leveraging ITEEA’s Authorized Training Institute to empower you to help teach other teachers. You can share what you have discovered works and learn from other teachers. In this session, we’ll reflect on two professional development opportunities: Authorized Training Institutes as well as Summer Institutes. We will reflect on our experience as a mechanism for you to consider if these leadership development experiences are right for you!

Nathan Mentzer is an associate professor at Polytechnic with a joint appointment to the College of Education at Purdue University. Hired as a part of the strategic P12 STEM initiative, Dr. Mentzer prepares Technology and Engineering candidates for teacher licensure, conducts research, and mentors graduate students. Nathan has taken an active role in guiding the evolution of the undergraduate teacher education program at Purdue informed by his National Science Foundation-funded research on Design Thinking.

Nathan’s work as a teacher educator is firmly rooted in his personal teaching experience. He was a teacher in Darby, Montana where he taught high school and junior high school technology education. As a teacher, Nathan expanded the program offerings by developing courses, writing grants, broadening participation of traditionally underrepresented students and actively making explicit connections to other STEM disciplines. He was recognized by the community with three Teacher of the Year awards.

Tracy Young is the STEAM Specialist at Benton Hall Academy in Little Falls, NY.  Mrs. Young is the Engineering byDesign instructor for over 500 students in Kindergarten through fifth grade. She has served as Secretary of ITEEA's Elementary STEM Council since 2016. In that time, she has presented at the ITEEA International Conferences in Kansas City, Baltimore, and Orlando. Tracy also has presented at the 2022 NYSTEEA Conference as well as the Fall 2022 Technology conference at SUNY Oswego. She co-teaches an EBD class at Purdue University with Dr. Nathan Mentzer. During the school year, Mrs. Young facilitates collaborative field work with Utica University students in person in her STEAM Lab as well as virtually as needed.

Three of Mrs. Young’s fifth grade students won the 2018 ITEEA Elementary STEM Council’s Grand Design Challenge. In 2018, Mrs. Young was also awarded the Observer Dispatch’s Amazing Teacher Award. Mrs. Young was previously a first grade teacher and is in her 27th year of teaching.
